My first book has finally landed, and she isn't here to quietly sit on the shelf.

PREPARING US FOR A YEAR OF VOICE...

Writing for me is a part of who I am. If it's not in my journal, it's on my laptop or saved as an audio file. Words have meaning and magick that, when shared, build bridges across realms.

A memoir about the voices that shape us — and what it takes to find our own.

There comes a moment when silence stops protecting you and starts suffocating you. When the stories you’ve carried, the expectations you’ve absorbed, and the voices that once guided you begin to drown out your own.

In Devotion and Rebellion traces the journey of a life shaped by listening — to family, to culture, to the inner chorus of doubt and desire — and what happens when those voices go quiet, leaving only the question of who you really are. Through moments of tenderness, loss, humour, and defiance, Charlie writes about the long, uneven path of coming of age: the relationships that shape us, the emotions we learn to hide, and the slow unlearning that makes space for truth.

This is a story about devotion — to the people and ideals that once kept you safe — and the rebellion it takes to step beyond them, about remembering the voices that once mattered, losing them, and finding your own again. It’s for anyone who’s ever felt the pull between belonging and becoming, between the comfort of what’s known and the risk of listening inward.

The playlist that came before the book!

Music and I have always been best friends. Where my words fail, music fills the cracks.

This is a playlist that not only inspired the creation of this book but also accompanied me throughout the entire process. There isn't a run, cord or ad lib that I am not familiar with. It's not one of those playlists that gets forgotten.

    Not this one!

Like so many of us, my first mixtape was precisely that. Made with a blank cassette and ninja speed fingers, recording the top ten countdown from the radio. This progressed to burning CDs with LimeWire, mini discs for gigs and then an iPod with almost ten thousand songs.

You might say mixtapes and playlists have been with me since the beginning. Songs that remind me of my childhood in the back of my dad’s Mondeo, making up dances in the garden with friends from our street, songs I sent to boyfriends when in that crash of hormones. Music and me - we go way back.

Listening is a choice, but if you want to create a bigger weaving, then I recommend it. If you find a song you love, then consider it a musical gift from my heart to yours. There is really something for everyone there. It’s on both online music streaming platforms: Amazon Music and Spotify. I then spent weeks organising them in a particular order, crying and typing, and typing and crying.

There are songs I danced to in my teens, songs I sang since I was a baby, and, of course, many that are about the power of our voice. We went from over 120 songs to half. There is nothing in there that does not hold a root to my life or a connection to the book. Perhaps I’ll do a podcast one day and go over them one by one with you, but for now they are there to share.
